An excellent copy of the first edition of Nebesky-Wojkowitz's foundational scholarly study of the occult practices of Tibetan mysticism, its iconography and related cult practices. René Mario de Nebesky-Wojkowitz was an ethnologist specialising in Tibet. And this is his most famous work. A lovely copy. Pages are clean and crisp: no inscriptions, no markings or tanning, no notes or labels at all. Just the slightest of browning on front FEP. And one or two very minor fox spots. A typical 'old book' smell perhaps, but not smoke or damp. Binding is excellent. Black boards are clean and square, and spine retains its gilt and red colours very nicely. Dust jacket is very good: clipped (fore and rear flaps), and potentially laminated at some point, it is clean for its age, just little creasing most especially at the top edge, and one or two minor spots where th laminate has slightly lifted from the jacket. But the laminate has clearly done its job, and the yellow writing stands out very well from the black background. A really nice copy and scarce with the DJ and in this state. Two additional points about the book and its author: this edition was hugely influential for Herge when he crafted his masterpiece 'Tintin in Tibet' in the late 1950s, and indeed his copy now resides at the Herge Museum in Belgium. Secondly, due to Nebesky-Wojkowitz's early death an urban legend has developed that he was killed not by pneumonia (the stated cause) but as a result of the wrath of the Tibetan deities he had studied and described!
