The first edition of this work.Association copy, inscribed to the recto of the front endpaper, 'Joyce, For her birthday, with love, from Louis, 1957'.Joyce Gill was a life-long friend of Evelyn Waugh. Joyce and Evelyn had a passionate affair during the annulment of Evelyn"s first marriage to "She-Evelyn". The pair were introduced sometime around Christmas in 1923 at a nightclub in Fitzrovia, their affair seeming to come to a head in the summer of 1935, when Evelyn invited Joyce to leave her husband and join him on his travels to Abyssinia.In the original publisher"s unclipped dustwrapper."The Ordeal of Gilbert Pinfold" is a largely autobiographical novel, based off the author"s period of hallucinations caused by bromide intoxication.Evelyn Waugh was a noted English author of the twentieth century, best known for his novel "Brideshead Revisited" and "A Handful of Dust". In the original publisher's cloth binding, in the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, smart, with some light marks to the boards and spine. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Light spots to the fore edge. Gift inscription to the recto of the front endpaper. Dust wrapper is edge worn, with small closed tears, and a couple of chips to the head of the front wrap, one larger chip to the fore edge. Light spots and age-toning to the dust wrapper. Spots to the reverse of the dust wrapper, with small damp stains to the reverse to the head. Internally, firmly bound.
