He contributed a lot of pioneer work to experimental pathology of the ear. He left a unique collection of serial sections of temporal bones from animals (55,000 slides) and man (102,000 slides). " "Nearly two thirds of his more than 130 publications including his larger treatises on "Die normale und pathologische Pneumatisation des Schläfenbeins" (1918) and on "Die Otosklerose auf Grund eigener Forschungen" (1919) were written by Wittmaack in Jena. On the basis of systematic histological research on animal and human temporal bones Wittmaack developed a "Pneumatisationslehre" in which he was the first to advocate a comprehensive concept of the forms of pneumatisation of the temporal bone." "As to the pathogenesis of otosclerosis Wittmaack observed that the otosclerotic process starts with a marked venous stasis within a selected area of the bony capsule of the inner ear. A zone is found around the enlarged vessels within which the bony substance is absorbed and its place taken by a tissue moderately rich in cells. In Hamburg Wittmaack developed a surgical method to lift the dura by the transtemporal approach in order to interrupt the venous stasis in the chief vein that leaves the otosclerotic focus near the oval window in early cases of otosclerosis.
