Also, an important book in the history of moving pictures since Vol 3 discusses the Thaumatrope, a pioneering device for displaying images in motion. Other topics covered include momentum, geometry, elasticity and the collision of bodies; the science behind these is demonstrated using a yo-yo, a jack-in-the-box, marbles and a slingshot, among various other toys and games. The books were designed for the younger reader and have approximately 30 simple line drawings at intervals throughout to help illustrate the science. ##### John Ayrton Paris (1785-1856), writer and physician, became a member of the Linnean Society in 1810, and served as president of the Royal College of Physicians from 1844 until his death. ##### Condition: Poor; but a great copy for rebinding. The covers are a shambles; but the text blocks are very good. Clean, tight, bright with no foxing except for light foxing and staining to the fep and title page of vol 1.
