Ce dernier, qui avait déposé plusieurs brevets sur la reproduction des sons et des images, est surtout connu pour avoir inventé la trichromie (procédé de photographie et d'impression polychrome), pour la photographie en couleurs. Il est également l'inventeur des "anaglyphes", ces images qui restituent l'impression de relief quand on les regarde au travers de lunettes verte-rouge. Le passage de la photographie à la couleur marque un tournant important dans l'Histoire de cette discipline qui évolue continuellement: "Et nous ne sommes pas au bout!
