First impression of the true first edition. ***Very good in burgundy cloth-covered boards with a red-printed white paper label on the spine. The fragile label is complete, just slightly marked. The boards are quite clean, with just light marks commensurate with age and handling. Page block edges foxed with the top edge darkened. No tears to the fragile cloth, and no bumps or creases. Corners sharp. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Internally also very good, with a couple of pencil inscriptions to the front free endpaper. There is some foxing affecting the endpapers and first and last few printed pages. Pages otherwise clean. The book is printed on very thick paper - almost like thin card. ***In a very good printed dustwrapper, which has the original publisher's printed price of 5/- net on the spine. The dustwrapper is remarkably complete, with just some rubbing and creasing at the extremities, and very slight loss at the top of the spine and foldover corner tips. There is a stain which affects the spine, but is not too noticeable. No serious creases or tears. The wide inner flaps are virtually uncreased - just light creases to the fore-edge of the front flap and the top edge of the back flap. ***128 pages. 192mm x 130mm. ***Contents: I. Psychoanalysis vs. Morality; II. The Incest Motive and Idealism; III. The Birth of Consciousness; IV. The Child and His Mother; V. The Lover and the Beloved; VI. Human Relations and the Unconscious. ***'David Herbert Lawrence (11 Sep 1885 - 2 Mar 1930) was an English novelist, short story writer, poet and essayist. His modernist works reflect on modernity, social alienation and industrialization, while championing sexuality, vitality and instinct. Several of his novels, "Sons and Lovers", "The Rainbow", "Women in Love", and "Lady Chatterley's Lover", were the subject of censorship trials for their radical portrayals of sexuality and use of explicit language. Lawrence's opinions and artistic preferences earned him a controversial reputation; he endured contemporary persecution and public misrepresentation of his creative work throughout his life, much of which he spent in a voluntary exile that he described as a "savage enough pilgrimage". At the time of his death, he had been variously scorned as tasteless, avant-garde, and a pornographer who had only garnered success for erotica; however, English novelist and critic E. M. Forster, in an obituary notice, challenged this widely held view, describing him as "the greatest imaginative novelist of our generation". Later, English literary critic F. R. Leavis also championed both his artistic integrity and his moral seriousness.' (Wiki) ***First impression of the true first edition, one of just 1,000 copies printed, in the original dustwrapper. Copies in the dustwrapper are uncommon. ***Of interest to collectors of the work of D. H. Lawrence and works concerning Freud and Psychoanalysis. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 8856
