Octavo, turquoise boards (hardcover), gilt lettering, 219 pp. Near Fine, with bookplate; in a Fine, mylar protected dust jacket. From dust jacket: Paddy Finucane was the fighter ace who became a legend in his own lifetime, widely publicised in the press. Modest by nature, he was upset by the constant references to himself as "Bader's successor." But the spotlight never left him. Joining the RAF in 193?, Finucane made a poor start to his flying career, and was of flying operationally till the Battle of Britain when every pilot was needed. Posted to 65 Squadron for the Battle of Britain, he went on to become a flight commander with the first Australian squadron in Britain, 452, where his qualities of leadership quickly became apparent. It was with them that he scored his most spectacular successes in the circus sweeps on the French coast. IN January 1942 he became squadron commander of 602 Squadron, and at the time of his death was Wing Commander Flying, Hornchurch. When he disappeared after ditching in the Channel in July 1942 he had destroyed 32 enemy aircraft, and had established an outstanding reputation for tactics and flying skill. A myth grew around him of a wild fighting Irishman, for the public needed its daredevil heroes. Now for the first time, the man has been separated from the myth. The author with the full co-operation of Finucane's family, and years of research, has recreated not only the details of his service record, but the man, who far from being a wild Irishman was thoughtful, highly disciplined and respected, a man born to lead.
