A fourth poetry collection of five publised, which was written five years before the author s death. Young poet was already seriously ill, and the knowledge of the approaching death shadowed his works, where central themes circle around suffering, sin, and efforts to achieve purity of spirit. He wrote about dreams and death, leading his friends to believe that he knew of his impending death. The image of death, burial, and continued existence appears in verse Kun olin kuollut (When I was dead), in which the poet imagines that, after he has been laid in his grave, he listens to a conversation between a woman he loved and another person about him. Poem Poikani (My Son) is dedicated to poet s unborn son and depicts small boy dissapearing when he tries to take his hand. In Partaalla (On the Brink) most directly expressed his private terrors, a nightmare of frightening intensity, which are born from poet s mental collapse. Modernist book cover design and 26 brilliant expressionist graphical vignettes at the beginning of each verse created by well-known Finnish Expressionist painter Väinö Kunnas (1896-1929). Uuno Kailas (1901 1933) was the most prominent Finnish poet between the world wars. Being leading poet of literary group Tulenkantajat (The Torch Bearers), he returned to classical ideals of poetry and traditional metres. Considered to be the archetypal tragic poet, Kailas lived a short and sad life, and died in poverty, struggling with mental sickness and disease. Yet within the span of his tragically short life he died days short of his 32nd birthday he wrote such poignant poetry that he became immortal in the annals of the history of literature. Topics such as death, darkness, burden, and illness were recurring motifs in his poetry, a stark reminder of the era he lived in, which was marked by escalating political unrest, wars, mass destruction and loss of faith in humanity. The tragedies of his own sad life were also reflected in his poems. He suffered from mental illnesses and never enjoyed robust physical health. Always in a state of mental turmoil, writing poetry was the only respite in his lonely life. He was a prolific poet and five collections of his poetry were published during his lifetime and one posthumously. Sven H. Rossel wrote in A History of Scandinavian Literature, 1870-1980 on Kailas: "His major poems are placed in the twilight zone between vigil and dream and become magnificent projections of the poet's feeling of guilt and fear of death. They belong to the most fascinating artistic achievements of modern European poetry.". Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 69
