Undertaking great expense and some danger, the purpose of the expedition was to hamper the International Slave Trade by contacting tribal chiefs along the Niger River and its tributaries. Through establishing commercial relationships with these chiefs, the Expedition hoped to prevent the trade of slaves from Africa to Brazil, Cuba, and the United States colonies. Lord John Russell says of slavery in a letter in this book: ".no fact can be more certain that [slavery] involves a waste of human life, and a sum of human misery, proceeding from year to year, without respite or intermission, to such an extent as to render the subject the most painful of any which, in the survey of the condition of mankind, it is possible to contemplate." Included are letters to and from the Abolitionist Sir T.F. Buxton and explorer and patron Sir John Barrow. An important title in the history of exploration and in the abolitionist movement, with a large coloured folding map of the "River Niger, showing the course of the Expedition under Captain Trotter in 1841.".
