A charming book of Paris stories, descriptive of the city and France shorty after the time of Napoleon. The first edition of this work, uncommonly seen complete in two volume. One of the earliest published books by William Makepeace Thackeray, one of five published under pseudonym M. A. Titmarsh. Thackeray was a British author and illustrator known for his satirical works, in particular Vanity FairandThe Luck of Barry Lyndon; the latter was adapted into a film by Stanley Kubrick in 1975.Illustrated with frontispieces to each volume as well as ten full page plates and other designs in text by the author, on copper and wood. Externally generally sound with shelf wear, spine and boards rubbed, with minor chipping to head and tail of spine. Hinges slightly strained, boards holding firm. Internally, firmly bound. Light spotting and age toning to leaves of plates, as usual with the type of paper used, otherwise pages are bright and clean.
