Beschreibung
Natalie Merchant set one of Sigourney s most famous poems, Indian Names, to music for Merchant s 2010 album Leave Your Sleep and Sigourney, Iowa is named for her but she is barely known now. Such is the fate of many extremely popular 19th century writers; it seems particularly true for a certain style of female writers. Here we have L.H. Sigourney s 1854 musings on aging, Past Meridian. Known in life as the Sweet Singer of Hartford, she was a poet and a writer of, among other things, two conduct books for young women. She was also noted for her elegiac work, or death literature, particularly at the deaths of young people known to her. This copy in original blue cloth boards textured cloth stamped in blind on covers and gilt on spine. The rear board is buckled, possibly from weight applied in damp conditions, there is a damp stain that affects the bottom margin of the text block throughout which is consistent with the buckling to rear board; this defect results in my fair rating, otherwise the book is good. Boards show some rubbing, wear to corners and spine, slight tear at head. Binding is square and tight, pages flow well and the text block is generally free from markings. Book plate from a private library, E.W. Hodge s. On front paste-down, opposite shows pencil notation, Read in March 1894. E.W. Hodge. On following free leaf is a gift inscription in light pencil referencing the first chapter describing ante- and past-meridians. A note on private sales.
Often potential buyers ask for the opportunity to purchase from me directly rather than through the AbeBooks portal where they found the listing, usually for a slightly lower price. Presumably the benefit to me is some marginal savings on commissions or tax. The convenience of having all my record keeping and billing being handled through one platform outweighs any small savings. In addition, I believe the service AbeBooks provides?putting these books in front of potenti...
