Artikelbeschreibung des Verkäufers

Highsmith, Patricia. The Glass Cell, 1964, examines wrongful imprisonment, psychological deterioration, and the difficulty of returning to domestic life after confinement, extending Highsmith's postwar crime fiction beyond the criminal pursuit plots associated with Tom Ripley. The novel follows engineer Philip Carter, falsely imprisoned for fraud, through six years of incarceration and his subsequent estrangement from his wife, child, and former sense of self. Its treatment of imprisonment centers not only on physical confinement but on the lasting effects of violence, suspicion, humiliation, and betrayal, supporting study of prison representation and criminal psychology in mid twentieth century American fiction. Highsmith, Patricia. The Glass Cell. Garden City, NY: Doubleday & Company, 1964. First edition. Stated "First Edition" on copyright page. Original unclipped pictorial dust jacket. Ex-library copy from Camden County Free Library, with "DISCARD" stamp and date stamps to front and rear endpapers and additional library marking to title page. Highsmith structures Carter's release from prison as a continuation rather than an end to his punishment: his damaged relationships and altered responses to violence become central to the novel's account of postcarceral alienation. The dust jacket describes his imprisonment as "a slow, insidious erosion of mind and soul," a formulation that closely identifies the book's interest in the cumulative psychological effects of confinement. The text also contains sexual ambiguity and homoerotic implication, elements that recur elsewhere in Highsmith's fiction, though The Glass Cell does not make same sex desire its principal subject. Published in the same year as Highsmith's The Two Faces of January, The Glass Cell belongs to a period in which she was already established as a writer of psychological crime fiction and more than a decade removed from the publication of The Price of Salt, her 1952 novel of lesbian desire. The prison setting allowed Highsmith to examine coercion, masculinity, violence, and moral instability through an institution that physically separates Carter from ordinary social relations and continues to shape his conduct after release. Jacket bright and intact with light edge wear. Discard stamps and library markings as noted; binding sound and contents clean. Very good overall. First edition preserving Highsmith's sustained treatment of incarceration and its psychological aftermath within her 1960s fiction.…
