Gilt dentelles and marbled endpapers. Half-title with decorative ruling. Title page with decorative ruling and publisher's device. Designed by Warren Chappell. "Translations from Goethe have been proceeding for about 175 years. The accumulation, in sheer numbers, is impressive yet some work still remained to be translated even for this selective edition; or existing translations proved too stilted and had to be replaced with new versions." (Thomas Mann). The collection contains poems, dramas, ballads, fiction, travel sketches, autobiographical writings, literary essays, letters, proverbs in rhyme and prose, with a special section with "Poems of Wisdom."
