Original green cloth, spine lettered in gilt, front cover with large gilt-stamped vignette and lettering, decorated in blind; pp. viii, 296, 16 (advertisements), tinted frontispiece and numerous wood-engraved illustrations in the text; cloth faded in places; lightly spotted; Bath Public Reference Libray blind-stamps and their bookplate inside front cover; a good copy. First edition of a scarce Northern travel narrative. George Francklin Atkinson (1822-1859) served with the Bengal Engineers between 1840 and 1859, and wrote a few travel books. He set out in the usual direction from Britain to the Rhine, however turning north via Hamburg, and then to Saint Petersburg, where he attended the marriage of Grand Duchess Olga and was introduced to the Tsar. This description of the Russian capital, its institutions and society take up 110 pages, and is followed by Atkinson's travelogue of Sweden, Denmark and Schleswig-Holstein.
