Tall Quarto, small folio, bound in dark brown leather covered boards with deep blind stamped decoration and gilt lettering on covers and back strips. Leather has some shelf wear, but generally in very good condition. All edges gilt. The contents are very good with age toning of paper, scattered foxing that usually does not affect the plates, but a few are affected. There are lots of high quality steel plate engravings as well as lots of very nice woodcut b&w illustrations throughout the volumes. This work was issued in separate parts, but also with a choice of bindings as well- this was probably the more expensive binding. Vols. were issued in 1875, 1878 and 1879, respectively and appear to be first editions of each. Sets often have heavy wear, this one is light to moderate.
