One of a LIMITED EDITION OF ONLY 100 COPIES, this is a very high quality photocopy (or perhaps a photolithograph) of the original typescript. A near very good A4 sized pale green card-covered book with black titling and map illustration to the front cover and a black glossy tape-cloth spine. Affected by light over time there is some light fading/discolouration to the green card and some corner creasing to the bottom front corner of the card and some subsequent pages, o/w internally clean and tight, with NO inscriptions or other marks. Mainly unpaginated, and about 2cm/1 inch thick overall. Illustrated with one outline Map." This study consists of a series of papers forming a detailed study of The Place-names of Devynock Hundred - that is, the south-western part of the former county of Brecknock. Commenced in 1980, these papers have appeared in succesive editions of Brycheiniog from Vol. XXI, 1984/5, starting with the Author's community of residence: Pen-pont. The whole project, has been influenced by the book 'The Place-names of Dinas Powys Hundred' by Gwynedd Pierce. No apology is made for using this model, as both its author and the content of the book are acknowledged as authorities in the subject of place-names. The choice of an obselete administrative unit is one purely of convenience in that the extent of ground covered by a Hundred is a practical area for such a study. It is only in recent years that any serious attempts have been made to provide a study specifically of Breconshire place-names." . The first appeared in Brycheiniog, Vol XI, 1965 under the title Some Breconshire Place-Names by Stephen Williams and it is unfortunate that this article only covered names from A to G and then only the principal ones. In 1971, Dewi Davies published a handbook Welsh Place-names of Breconshire, a very useful booklet which was, by its nature, unable to provide any detailed analysis of the subject matter. Thirdly, in Brycheiniog, Vol XVIII, 1978/9, the Author published a paper entitled Notes on a Place-name Element Peculiar to Breconshire which dealt with a place-name element occurring frequently in Devynock Hundred. Apart from small exceptions, this study will not duplicate, but rather compliment the last mentioned publications. Although many editions and scales of maps of the Ordnance Survey have been consulted and quoted, the basis for the study has been the 1: 25,000 version. The choice of this scale in preference to the larger scales has been influenced by its availability in the series Outdoor Leisure: Brecon Beacons, revised c1986 and Pathfinder, revised c1987, and most names listed will be found on the appropriate sheets. Names from historical sources however are quoted unaltered and when no modern record exists they are recorded as 'lost' and a map reference or a description giving their location is given whenever this is possible. Equally important have been the 1840 Tithe Maps and Schedules and the Census Returns 1841-81. Likewise the Pen-pont Documents in the National Library of Wales and the Abercamlais Documents in the Powys Record Office have provided a fund of information and are, without doubt, the most detailed source available for the area of the Hundred. Also, in addition to the well-known county histories, the various parish histories have been invaluable for areas concerned. Lastly, mention must be made of the Black Book of Carmarthen, a book of some forty poems written in the 13th C, but thought to contain material composed some three or four centuries earlier, containing some of the earliest evidence available of Welsh personal and place-names which any serious study of the subject cannot afford to ignore. In particular, the 'Stanza of the Graves' is full of such names which, in one case, Bruin o Bricheinauc, can be positively identified with Breconshire, while others, cf. Reon Rid with Rant Rheon (8.21) , Guriad with Nant Gwriad (1.11) , Ryddnant with Rhudd Nant (2.96) , Epint with Mynydd Epynt, et al. , a. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers M011105
