Beschreibung
8vo. Pp. 288. Bound in light blue cloth with yellow lettering and rules stamped on spine. Top edge dyed yellow. Fading to edges of cloth, else Fine. In the illustrated dust jacket, edges worn and rubbed, light chipping at head and tail of spine, and with an old one-inch square tape repair on verso. First published in London by Gollancz, this scarce Frank Tilsley (1904- 1957) novel captures the angst of those once-upwardly mobile workers whose ambition was crushed by the Great Depression. Reprinted in 1976, the first edition and subsequent American edition are scarce; rare with dust jacket. The superb art-deco dust jacket presents central figures Allen and Jane as threatened by the gnashing teeth of industrialization. Dust jacket illustrator uncredited. However, it mimics (or vice versa) the dust jacket for Eardley Beswick's Original Design, which also depicts diminished figures negotiating gear teeth. Perhaps the worst of the Great Depression was factory owners miniaturizing workers and then forcing them to run on the teeth of gears. Dust jacket is now preserved in a removable, clear archival sleeve. . Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 5968
