Includes a specially commissioned small bookplate affixed inside the book confirming this Served as a lieutenant, 3rd Battalion, Sherwood Foresters, attached R.F.C. Died of wounds April 29th, 1917. Contains biographical notes by L.A.G. Strong. Francis Morris was born on February 21st 1896 in Ashbourne, Derbyshire. He was the youngest son of Canon Morris, Rector of Ashbourne and formerly regimental Chaplain for the Nottinghamshire and Derby Regiment (?Sherwood Foresters?). After he left school he immediately commenced officer training and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Sherwood Foresters in July 1915. Thereafter he transferred to the RFC and was posted to the 3rd Squadron. While serving with the 3rd Squadron he crashed during a blizzard in the Vimy Ridge area in April 1917 and fractured both his legs, one of which was then amputated. On the 29th April he was operated on again in a military hospital in Rouen and died under anesthetic. His grave is in the St Sever Cemetery, Rouen, France. Book is just about good with marked and rubbed boards. Edges rubbed and age toned spine. Contents good. Inscription to end paper. Pages internally age toned and lightly marked.
