I believe this to be the First Edition. On the Copyright Page it is dated 1838 and on the title page 1839. But several of the identified Firsts sold in auction are identical to mine and are also dated 1839. And although this book is very rare, I've yet to find one that was published in 1838. I also believe the covers of my book are the originals, though again I'm not certain. They're brown, the same color as those identified as original. They also have the printed paper label on the spine. And between pages 124 and 125 you will find the two folding leaves of a facsimile Andrew Jackson letter. What seems to differentiate my book from the others I've read about is the condition of the covers. Not only are they not detached, they don't have even a single crack. They don't have any give. No looseness. They are solidly bound. Moreover, the spine label is present and has only a small loss at the top and bottom right-hand corners, in neither case reaching the lettering (see 2nd photo). The cover wear on this book published in 1839 is minimal. On the six edges there is not one instance of rub-through. Of the four corners, three have only a very small spot of rub-through and one has a speck-sized spot rub-through. The spine ends, as you can see, have only a bit of wear. The spine has color fading, as does the area off the top edge of the front, also a little at the bottom front. There are three spots of fading or discoloration on the rear (3rd photo). The covers have a raised flower design. This book has some provenance. On the first front end paper there's a penciled name and partial address: 'James M. Slade, Middlebury, Vermont'. His father, William Slade, was the 17th governor of Vermont. James M. Slade was born in Middlebury, Vermont in 1812. Like his father he was a politician, rising to become the Lieutenant Governor of Vermont from 1856 to 1857. Down below the penciled signature of Mr. Slade there is a small purple stamp that reads 'The Sheldon Art Museum, Middlebury, Vermont'. The interior of the book is in very good condition. The gutter between the front inside cover and the first front end paper is in very solid shape with just a handful of small spots where a little paper is lifted or punctured. Between the rear cover and the last rear end paper there are cracks at the gutter, particularly visible from the side, but the binding there is still quite solid and there isn't any cover looseness. The first rear end paper has lifted away from the textblock over the bottom third of the page, however it is still attached over that bottom third a little higher up from the textblock. Most importantly, scrolling through all the pages of the text, I found no instances of any spaces or cracks between pages. Quite to the contrary, the pages are very tightly bound, allowing me to assert that this is a very solidly bound book. I did find on one or the other side of the gutters some very thin creasing. None of these though reaching the print. The condition of the pages is, overall, very good. Five consecutive early pages have a minuscule neat loss at the bottom corner. On the next page the paper at the bottom corner was too long and was folded in. Over the remainder of the pages the corners look perfect. The last page and two rear end papers bring back this minuscule corner loss. Foxing is reported to be very common in this book. Mine is not an exception. However, it seems to have been affected to a lesser extent than most others. The inside covers are very foxed. And there's a good amount on the end papers, the title page, and the pages of the preface. However, there is a dramatic change after that and the rest of the pages, up until the last few, have very, very little foxing. I've provided a photograph of the typical page. Finally, beside the one referenced stamp, there are no markings. There are also no attachments. And with the exception of Mr. Slade's signature, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 001691
