First edition of this landmark treatise, in Keynes words "the first modern book on economics", and the work which introduced utility theory into the field of economics. William Jevons (1835-1882), more than any other figure, was responsible for bridging the gap between classical economics, with its focus on the labour theory of value, and neoclassical economics, with its focus on utility. It was Jevons' pioneering use of calculus to address economic problems that established economics as a mathematical science, laying the foundation which revolutionized the field. This is a VG copy with pencil inscriptions to fep; wear and chipping to crown of spine with rubbing to spine heel; scuff mark to cloth midway up spine; lower corners bumped, with light wear and rubbing to board edges; minor tearing to endpaper along front gutter, but a sound, pleasing copy, with the majority of pages uncut, in a custom made buckram clamshell folding box.
