Reddish brown boards with designs blind stamped and in gilt. Image of butterfly in gilt on cover with lettering and floral patterns in gilt on spine. Fair condition only with one plate missing. Front hinge is very badly cracked leaving front board nearly detached. Rear hinge is also cracked, though it is in slightly better shape. Rubbing to edges, with boards exposed at corners. Sizable chip missing from fabric on spine with fraying to head and tail as well. Toning to spine and edges of boards. Mild soiling. Despite both gutters being cracked, binding still holds fairly tight. Interior has some foxing and occasional tears and chips to page edges. Previous owner's name is written on front pastedown and title page, dated 1852. Small sticker from a bookseller on front pastedown and one from a bookbinder on rear pastedown. Originally featured a frontispiece and 15 color plates, only plate six is missing. Also includes about 10 pages of advertisements for similar titles. This introduction to the study of entomology hopes to encourage further pursuit of the subject by exploring the beauty and diversity of insects native to the British Isles.
