Narrative chapters recount his collaborations w/ Marcel Duchamp, his development of camera-less rayographs and solarized darkroom processes, his presence in interwar Parisian bohemia and his wartime exile in Los Angeles. The memoir functions simultaneously as personal narrative and as documentation of twentieth-century avant-garde circles. Little, Brown and Company published the book in Boston in 1963 in association w/ The Atlantic Monthly Press. A photographic frontispiece captures Man Ray in Hollywood in 1947, complemented by halftone plates reproducing his paintings, rayographs, assemblages and portraits from across his career. The text records the development of solarization, experimental cinema and mechanical sculpture through first-person exposition. First-hand accounts detail central figures of the interwar avant-garde, including Marcel Duchamp, Francis Picabia, Pablo Picasso, Gertrude Stein, James Joyce and Kiki de Montparnasse. Man Ray, born Emmanuel Radnitzky in 1890, contributed to the Dada and Surrealist movements in both New York and Paris, and his darkroom experimentation, fashion and portrait photography and subversive object-making expanded twentieth-century photographic technique. The book is a first-person record of one of the more versatile American modernists, studied today across modern art, Dadaism and photographic history.
