85 Pages Indexed. Previous owner's name Judson Ford at the top of the front endpaper. Tennis has been the most important thing in my life ever since I first picked up a racquet at the tender age of ten. Our home is located only two doors from San Diego's prominent University Heights playground and it was there that my career began. Attached to this public playground were three white-stained courts, and each day on my way to play tag in the sand piles I would stop and watch players hitting balls back and forth. One day "Lil Mo" decided she would like to try her luck at this game, so I started picking up balls for the local tennis professional, Wilbur Folsom. This ball-girl routine became a daily habit and soon the coach handed me a racquet and said, "Go to it." That's just what happened! I started by returning balls to his pupils and learning how to scramble from one side of the court to the other. When I was ten and a half, mother bought me a $1.50 racquet to enter my first tournament. This past year I was in England for the memorable coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Thanks to tennis, I saw a spectacle that people had come from the four corners of the earth to view. We also saw the Coliseum, the old Appian Way and the ancient Forum in Rome. In Paris, the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre and quaint sidewalk cafes were only part of the "tennis-tourist's" wanderings. Hawaii was the leisurely paradise where we spent the hours swimming and surfboard riding on famed Waikiki Beach. Mexico taught us history with its old Aztec and Toltec pyramids and monuments. Probably the most important thing tennis has taught me is the kind of fair play and sportsmanship that can be carried over to everyday living. It has taught me how to get along with people and to respect and admire those who have accomplished something in fields other than sports. Tennis has also given me a good sense of competition and a desire to do everything to the best of my ability-no matter what the job may be. As I look back on all that tennis has awarded me and the others who have participated in this great sport, my strongest hope is that it will continue to provide such wonderful opportunities to all players who strive to do their best.
