A little light spotting throughout, some pencilled notes to a blank rear flyleaf and an area of indeterminate soiling to the half-title. Former owner name inked to the front free endpaper. Eliot ('the rather limp versification of Mr. Eliot . is inseparatlbe from the spiritual limpness one feels behind the poems'), Robinson Jeffers ('His writing, line by line, is pretentious trash'), and Emerson ('it is always hard to say just how much Emerson meant, and perhaps would have been hardest for Emerson.') The Primitive and the Decadent, according to Winters, are the two basic imperfections among gifted poets: The Primitive 'utilize all of the means necessary to the most vigorous form but [owing to a spiritual and perceptive weakness] whose range of material is limited'; The decadent are those who 'display a fine sensitivity to language and who may have a wide scope, but whose work is incomplete formally.'.
