"The Convention of 1835 was a turning point in the history of North Carolina, its achievement a victory for democracy" (Lefler); suffrage was expanded, the east's domination over the west was diminished, the power of the General Assembly to enact private legislation was restricted, the power of the governor was increased, and representation in the assembly was tied into population figures.
