VERY RARE gilded & embossed hardcover book. "Prose Quotations from Socrates to Macaulay" By S. Austin Allibone. This book is believed to be the First Edition, published by J. B. Lippincott & Co., Philadelphia, 1882. Thick & heavy item. PLEASE NOTE: As this book is heavy (over 1.7 Kg with packaging), if you are buying this from outside the U.K. please expect additional shipping costs. 4to, 24.2 cm x 16.7 cm x 4.5 cm, Green cloth-covered bevelled boards with gilt & black embossed lettering & decoration on front cover & spine, Brown end papers, no dust-jacket. 756 pages. Weight: 1.490 Kg (1490 Grams). CONTENTS ARE LIKE NEW!!! However, there is a crack exposing mesh between end papers & pastedowns, at front & rear of book. Spine is scuffed alongside covers but clean & sturdy, gilt & decoration slightly worn away in places, gilt a little dull, bumped & frayed either end with slight damage there, binding remains tight. Cover is discoloured & a little grubby, marked in places mostly on back, few scratches & small bumps, gilt & decoration nice & bright, edges scuffed & worn. Corners are bumped & frayed with boards exposed. Top outer edge darkened, may have been gilt, all edges scratched, bottom edge marked. End papers & pastedowns discoloured, creased, damaged & scuffed front & rear of book. Small sticker on front pdown. Small piece missing from corner of 1st blank page. Some pages (very few) have tiny edge bumps/nicks, and/or corner folds/creases. Page 437/438 has small tear & folds near tail of spine area. Light age tanning & rare foxing throughout.
