1942. First edition. xii, 337pp., [i], and 81 black and white illustrations. Walter Jackson Freeman II (1895-1972) was an American physician who specialized in lobotomy. Raised in Philadelphia, he studied neurology at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School. In 1924 he relocated to Washington, D.C., and started practicing as the first neurologist in the city. Upon his arrival in Washington, Freeman began work directing laboratories at St. Elizabeths Hospital. Working at the hospital and witnessing the pain and distress suffered by the patients encouraged him to continue his education in the field. Freeman earned his PhD in neuropathology within the following few years and secured a position at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., as head of the neurology department. This volume is his scarce study of behaviour following prefontal lobotomy for mental disorders, and is divided into the following parts: Introduction; The Frontal Lobes; Clinical Observations on Prefrontal Lobotomy; Prefrontal Lobotomy and Mental Disorders; Prefrontal Lobotomy and Psychopathology. The book is bound in the original blue cloth covered boards with gold titlling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with some shelf wear and some light soiling on the boards. The spine ends are bumped and there is wear to the titling on the spine. The contents are tight and clean with some foxing to the half-title page and a few faint foxing marks on the title-page and top margin of a few poages. There is light bumping to the top corner of pages 180 to about 250. The endpapers are browned around the edges and there is an inscription on the front free endpaper that reads: "To Phillip with hope that these pages will entice him to stay home at nights? - Bernard" ('Phillip' being Phillip Harris (1922-2013), a noted Edinburgh neurosurgeon).
