Mathais was a Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge, also serving for a time as the queen's treasurer and librarian at Buckingham Palace. Being a great admirer of Thomas Gray, he issues a lavish edition of Gray's work that bankrupted him. He repaired to Italy in 1814 to recover and remained there the rest of his life, becoming the greatest English Italian scholar of the day, writing original verse in Italian and translated Milton and other English authors. He is best-known today as the author of The Pursuits of Literature, an anonymously published poem that appeared in four parts between 1794 and 1797.
