The running heads have been cropped severely, in some cases losing the whole head and page number, but the crop nowhere encroaches on the text. Original C17th boards with gilt embossed lozenge to front and rear with tooled doubled rule to outer edges of the boards. Recently sympathetically rebacked over raised bands with label. Attractive. This book covers the first 14 chapters of Genesis and was intended to be the first of other volumes on difficult passages in Scripture. Nicholas Gibbon (or Gibbens), the elder, a theological writer active around 1600, enrolled as a pensioner at Clare Hall, Cambridge, in June 1585. He earned his B.A. in 1588 9 and M.A. in 1592, with an incorporation at Oxford in July 1592. Identified with the Nicholas Gibbon of Heckford, Dorsetshire, he is linked to his son, born in Poole in 1605, who later became the rector of Corfe Castle [see Gibbon, Nicholas, the younger, (1605 1697)]. In 1601, Nicholas Gibbon published; Questions and Disputations concerning the Holy Scripture; a substantial work spanning nearly six hundred pages.
