It is not too much to say that he was largely instrumental in averting war between Great Britain and Russia at the time of the Russo-Turkish war of 1878. It was a great opportunity for a young man and he did not fail to acquit himself with distinction. For the most part, however, this book is not so much his life story as a collection of odds and ends of a more or less anecdotal character and of no political importance - the product of miscellaneous experiences both at home and in the great Capitals of Europe, Paris, St. Petersburg, and Vienna. These are of special interest if only for the sake of comparison with conditions prevailing to-day. But perhaps what lends most charm to his narrative is the delightful mid-Victorian flavour which pervades the whole.' [Quote taken from the front and rear flaps of the dustwrapper] ***First impression of the true first edition, in its original dustwrapper, in beautiful condition for quite a fragile book. Uncommon, especially in a complete dustwrapper. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate.
