BOOK DESCRIPTION: 12mo, 133 pgs. Original gray cloth with gilt titled covering spine. CONDITION DESCRIPTION: Minor shelf rubbing to covers and spine ends. Cover gilt bright. Interior is clean and tight. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: A memoir written by Wayland Fuller Dunaway, a Confederate soldier who fought in the American Civil War. The book recounts Dunaway's experiences during the war, including his enlistment in the Confederate army, his participation in various battles, and his eventual capture and imprisonment by Union forces. REFERENCES: KRICK 122: "Dunaway was a student at the University of Virginia when war broke out in 1861. He quickly enrolled in Co. F, 47th Virginia Infantry. The first year of the war was spent quietly along the shore of the Potomac. Dunaway's first battle was Seven Pines, quickly followed by the Seven Days' fighting, during which he was present at the capture of General George A. McCall. He also fought with the 47th in each of the remaining battles of 1862. The next March, Dunaway became captain of Co. I, 40th Virginia Infantry, another regiment in the same brigade. He remained in that position for the rest of the war. Dunaway's intelligent reminiscences are too short to be as useful as might be desired, but what there is constitutes a worthwhile book." NEVINS I pg 84: "Unfortunately, these recollections of a quiet and unassuming soldier are too brief to make this work one of exceptional value." DORN II 1447; COULTER 138:"These even-tempered reminiscences of a Confederate soldier are so brief that they avoid the unreliability of more detailed narratives, but add nothing to a general understanding of conditions in the Confederacy.".
