Poor condition. Two separate Methodist Episcopal Church South publications bound within a single volume. 1-791, [1], 1-48 pages. Hardcover; H 19.25cm x L 12cm. Original black leather binding, boards decorated with gilt stamped borders and floral patterns with additional muted floral stamping along board edges, "M.E. Church South, Eutaw Ala." stamped vertically in gilt at front board center, marred spine with four raised bands and gilt tooled compartments with gilt lettered title compartment "Hymns." Boards moderately bowed with some scuffing to leather along edges, top corner of rear board worn. Spine damaged with 1.5cm loss across head with jagged 2cm wide chip affecting second compartment from top exposing quires and with loss to title lettering, underlying string exposed at top raised band, several small surface chips and holes lengthwise towards heel, 2cm jagged loss at heel with jagged chipping to bottom corners of leaves at book's rear half but without loss of text. All edges gilt but with heavy soiling and staining. Decorative pink endpapers soiled with some chipping at edges; shallow bug damage-chipping at edges of several initial and terminal leaves as well as at bottom corners of pages 315-322 and 353-362; creasing to bottom corners of pages 323-352. Light to occasionally mild foxing and toning to interior leaves. A COLLECTION OF HYMNS FOR PUBLIC, SOCIAL, AND DOMESTIC WORSHIP inclusive to page 791 featuring Preface (pages 3-5), hymn lyrics without any musical scores divided into three sections (Public Worship, Social Worship, and Domestic Worship), Benedictions and Doxologies (pages 735-738), Index of Subjects (pages 739-746), Index of Texts (pages 747-753), Index of Stanzas (pages 754-766), and Index of Hymns (pages 767-791). Hymns appear to be consecutively numbered from #1-#1047 followed by Benedictions and Doxologies entries #1048-#1063. Separately paged section at rear THE RITUAL, THE GENERAL RULES, AND ARTICLES OF RELIGION, OF THE METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH, SOUTH with title page having same 1873 Nashville, Tennessee publisher imprint of A.H. Redford as the primary hymnal. Moisture staining to several rear leaves with rear flyleaf lacking fore-edge half and partial pencil notes upon its recto. Binding remains firm despite the aforementioned faults. Still an early edition of the official Southern Methodist Episcopal Church hymnal as the first official edition was published only seven years prior in 1866 and a particularly interesting as a copy with a firm provenance to the wealthy east central Alabama town of Eutaw located in Greene County which prospered in the antebellum era from area plantations and trade on the nearby Tombigbee River.
