Beschreibung
[corners bumped, old faint remainder mark on bottom edge, slight pucker in cloth on front cover; jacket heavily edgeworn, some paper loss at base of spine, separated at front hinge (held together by jacket protective cover)]. Novel set in Mexico, telling "the story of Quicksilver Gonzales, the bandit whose grandiose plans to 'liberate' his people bring them only tragedy. It is the story, too, of Cecilia, for whose sake the bandit killed and pillages -- and of her brother, Jesus Rodriguez, emerging from boyhood into a world of passion, cruelty, ignorance, and love." This was the Los Angeles-born author's first novel, and the jacket blurb played up his success in "radio, where he made his name; and the movies, which earn him his daily bread" -- although without citing specific accomplishments in either. (And in fact the majority of his credits would subsequently be earned in filmed television, his only feature film credit being on the 1957 film JOHNNY TROUBLE.) Following the publication in 1949 of his second novel, "Joey," though, he did form his a production company, ostensibly to adapt his own novels for the screen, but nothing appears to have come of that enterprise. (Tay Garnett was reported at one point as being set to direct a film version of "The Ravager.") Interestingly, the jacket blurb on this 1947 book states that he was 35 years old, but when died (of a heart attack) in 1959, both the New York Times and the Los Angeles Times reported his age as 39; none of that math quite adds up.
