A beautiful and unusually fresh copy housed in a striking custom caramel-colored morocco clamshell box with raised bands, gilt rules, and gray morocco title labels on the spine. A few very minor flaws: one tissue guard with a few old creases, now mellowed; another tissue guard with a one-inch closed tear at lower margin; and another with expert repair to half-inch tear at lower margin. Verso of one plate and opposite tissue guard with light offsetting due to a previously laid-in card. Very slight soiling to the front board. Altogether, Very Good+ book in Fine custom clamshell box. A lovely, well-preserved copy with all leaves fresh, binding bright and tight, and corners sharp perhaps the nicest copy of this work that we have handled. Illustrated with twenty-six engravings by the preeminent French Victorian artist, Gustave Doré. The first edition thus of this beautifully illustrated edition of the classic Poe poem. This was Doré's last book, published a year after his death. Six-page introduction by Edmund Stedman, "plainly there was something in common in the working moods of Poe and Doré." The Poe-Doré combination is indeed one of the most revered author-illustrator relationships.
