Beschreibung
Octavo, 465pp., Gilt lettered and decorated cover and spine. Top edge is gilt. [BAL 9501; Krichmar 4775] Green cloth binding. Julia Ward Howe ( May 27, 1819 - October 17, 1910) was a prominent American abolitionist, social activist, poet, and the author of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic." "The Battle Hymn of the Republic", one of the most popular patriotic songs, also known as "Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory" outside of the United States, is a song by Julia Ward Howe using the music from the song "John Brown's Body". Howe's more famous lyrics were written in November 1861, and first published in The Atlantic Monthly in February 1862. Words from the first verse gave John Steinbeck's wife Carol Steinbeck the title of his 1939 masterpiece The Grapes of Wrath. This copy of Reminiscences is inscribed to Harriet M. Lothrop, also known as Margaret Sidney, who was best known for writing the children's book, "Five Little Peppers and How They Grew." Howe, in her inscription, writes "The ever hospitable mistress of Wayside Harriet M. Lothrop wishes me to write my name in this book. Julia Ward Howe Sept. 2, 1903." This book was probably inscribed during the time leading up the centenary celebration of Nathaniel Hawthorne. Both figured prominently in the organization of that event. Lothrop personally supervised the placement of the bronze memorial for Hawthorne. Howe was present at that event and spoke. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 025588
