The first 506 pages are comprised of tables that list "Casualties Among Enlisted Men" in 1862, 1863, & 1864 as it pertains to Union soldiers from Iowa. Pages 507-625 presents "Reports of Battles, Skirmishes, &C., and History of Regiments" from Iowa. Significant portions of this section address the near mutinous and illegal behavior of troops in the area of Alexandria, Louisiana as encountered and reported by General George A. Custer when he arrived to take command of these troops in June of 1865. Men and officers of the First Iowa Cavalry were prominent in these activities. Included are the reports of several officers with first-hand knowledge of these problems, the report of General Custer, and the defense of the allegations made by Custer and others by Brig.-Gen.
