[4], xl, 430, [2, ads] pp. Full contemporary calf, rebacked preserving original spine. Spine stamped in gilt. Red morocco spine label, lettered in gilt. Newer endpapers. All edges stained red-brown. Board edges tooled in gilt. Boards scuffed and rubbed. Repairs to fore-edge margin of title-page and second leaf, not affecting text. Toning from glue to endpapers and margins of first three leaves. Previous owner's old ink and pencil notes on title-page and final ad leaf. Other minor pencil marginalia throughout. A few leaves with dog-eared creases. Some minor marginal staining to final 5 signatures. Still overall a very nice copy. The Republic, Plato's extended meditation on Justice and the nature of the ideal state, is a cornerstone of Western philosophy and politics, including, in Book VII's allegory of the cave, one of the most powerful descriptions of the human condition in all of literature. This, the first edition in English is "a very faithful translation.containing not only a general epitome of the Republic of Plato, but an accurate delineation of the characters, manners, and philosophy of the ancient Greeks" (Lowndes, 1878).
