New York, thick octavo, 678, 200 p., and tables. ***CONTENT: The title of this informative volume aptly describes its content. Understandably, much of the volume is devoted to the gold region of California and its mining operations. The author provides descriptions of the "mother lode", followed by county-by-county details of specific mines. Counties receiving special attention include Mariposa, Tuolumne, Calaveras, Amador, Placer, El Dorado, and several more. Hundreds of placer and hard-rock mines are noted within, with historical data and descriptions of workings and yield. Nevada is similarly described, with details on the Comstock Lode and Sutro Tunnel; other states considered include Arizona, Utah, Idaho, and Washington Territory. Especially instructive is Alexander Taylor's lengthy appendix report on Baja California: "Historical summary of Lower California, from its discovery in 1532 to 1867." ***CONDITION: This is a complete, VG copy in the original pebbled green cloth, with gilt lettering on the backstrip. The covers are sound, with minor edgewear; backstrip cloth with an inch-long chip, but the title lettering is complete and very legible. Joints just starting but strong, hinges solid, binding very firm. Save for a bit of scattered light foxing, the text pages are typically fresh, clean and bright. No evidence of previous ownership. This volume is an essential resource for information on the mineral resources of the far west. Nickles 144. BMNH 2172. International shipping will be extra for this volume, but only at my cost.
