With an introduction detailing the history of the apologue. Samuel Naylor was a writer and acquaintance of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. He was also a close personal friend and admirer of Ottilie von Goethe, the wife of Goethe's son. With the previous owner's neat gift inscription to the reverse of the front free endpaper. In the original full cloth. Externally, smart with some shelf wear to the edges. Cracking to the joints but still very firm. Spotting and marks to the boards. Spine is darkened. Marks to the paste-downs and free endpapers. Previous owner's ink inscription to the reverse of the front free endpaper. Internally, binding slightly strained but still firm.
