This book has achieved the accolade of having been one of the first 'modern' spy stories, set as it was in the lead up to the First World War. Setting sail across the North Sea and heading for Germany, for it is mostly a sailing story, they investigate the marshes and channels on the other side, secretly discovering clear evidence of preparations - perhaps for war. The book has some neat restorations, particularly to the spine and slightly to the first two or three pages which have been re-secured. There is slight wear to edges of cover, a bookplate and three old relevant newspaper cuttings glued in, one early review of the book and one an Irish newspaper gloatingly detailing the execution of the author, Erskine Childers in 1922.
