Beschreibung
Published for the author, by John McMillan, and printed by Henry Chubb, Market-Square, Saint John, N. B. (Canada), 1834. Oliver Goldsmith was born in New Brunswick, Canada in 1794, and his great-uncle was the famous Anglo-Irish poet Oliver Goldsmith who penned the famous poem The Deserted Village . This book The Rising Village is a play off of the noted well-known poem. This work was first published as The Rising Village: A Poem in London, England id 1825. The author reworked the poem, included additional poems, and published this book in 1834. The poem The Rising Village is the first poem to be published in book form by an English Canadian. The Rising Village is not, in fact, a particular village at all. It is a typical village that is used to suggest all the rising villages. It is, therefore, Nova Scotia itself. It should be noted that the author was living in Halifax, Nova Scotia as he wrote this poem. The movement in the poem is from the first settlement to a fully realized embodiment of the British idea which is Nova Scotia. The book is dedicated To the Inhabitants of Nova-Scotia and New-Brunswick, this little volume of poems is inscribed, by their very grateful and obedient servant, OLIVER GOLDSMITH . This book, 144 pages, is a small format book, with pages measuring 135mm X 90mm. It is bound in a silk-like cloth that is threadbare on both sides of the spine and at the corners, all edges gilt. The book is square and sound and internally, the book is in fine, bright condition. Not a hint of foxing or fading. There is a prior owners plate on the inside front cover and pasted on the opposite end page is a newspaper clipping referring to The Autobiography of Oliver Goldsmith . This is a truly rare and important work of Canadian literature and would be considered a cornerstone of any collection of Canadian poetry in very, acceptable original condition.
