London: Longmans, Green and Co., 1899. First Edition First Impressions. Half leather binding, with coarse grained morocco green leather and green cloth boards by Bayntun-Riviere of Bath, their stamp to the base of the rear free end paper. The spines faded to lighter green, page top edges gilt, others clean, the top corner of the pages look to have been bumped in the past. Two volumes, octavo. Collated and complete with seven photogravure plates, 34 maps and plans, 20 of which are printed in colour and folding and 58 illustrations, including tissue-guarded frontispieces, photogravure portraits. Rebound without the 32 page publisher's catalogue to the rear. Only 2000 copies were printed of the first impression, and only 500 printed of the second impression, making both editions scarce for any collector. The River War was Churchill's second published work, a history of the British imperial involvement in the Sudan and the Mahdi War between the British forces and the Dervish forces. Includes Churchill s account of the charge of the 21st Lancers, to whom he was attached, at Omdurman on 2 September 1898, described by the Dictionary of National Biography as "that last cavalry charge of the dying century". DNB considers The River War a "superb" history; whilst Churchill more graphically called it "a tale of blood and war".
