Woodcuts, color folding map; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 552 pages; 1872 D. Appleton & Company. 1st American edition. Stout large quarto in a custom full morocco binding. A heavy and lush grained brown morocco with decorative paneling in blind to sides and spine in six compartments with title & author directly tooled in gilt to spine compartments. Morocco appears to be over wooden boards; turn-ins decorated with fine dentelle work. All edges gilt; endpages marbled and hinges lined with heavy textured paper. Gift inscription to blank front dated Christmas 1872. Lavishly illustrated with woodcuts, many in full page presentation. Folded color map at rear appears to have been unfolded perhaps just a single time with a tiny mended tear at the attachment. Light shelf rubbing and mild distress to leather over joints and at corners. A small patch of light soiling to the gilt at front and top edges does not show to page surfaces, save for tiny shallow edge stains to title and following leaf. Front matter including contents and introduction printed on a different quality of paper than the primary text and has light general light toning. Primary text content on bright and white page stock with woodcuts clean and freshy. Custom binding appears to have needed the whole skin from a full grown goat. Front endpage blank toned at edge with a small chip at front. Gift inscription to William Longmire from William Matthews; the fine binding, unsigned, was presumably done for the purpose of the gift. Bound in full vellum with all page edges gilt with three hundred and forty-five engravings., 72 of which are full page, the remainder illustrations in the text. Colour fold out map of Rome to the front of the volume with a closed tear to the join with the volume. The vellum binding has the initials EGM (Extraordinary General Meeting?) and the year 1876 to the front vellum board. Inner gilt dentelles and silk effect end papers. The rear board has Romulus and Remus suckling at the belly of the she-wolf in gilt. Gilt titles to the spine. All page edges gilt. Pages shaken and the binding is a little loose, but all pages still attached (just). xxiii, [i], 552pp. Approximately 14 inches tall. Condition Report Externally Spine good condition gilt titles, 7 gilt bands separating 6 compartments, marked, worn and aged. Joints fair to good condition rubbed and cracked to the lower 2 inches of both joints, top inch of the front joint also cracked but structurally strong. Corners good condition worn and gently bumped. Boards good condition worn, darkened and gilt decorated, with EGM 1876 to the front board and Romulus, Remus and the She-Wolf to the rear board. Page edges fair condition gilt and shaken. See above and photos. Internally Hinges good condition intact but a little loose. Paste downs good condition plain, silk effect. End papers good condition plain silk effect, foxed and tanned to subsequent end papers. Title good condition tanned with some foxing. Pages fair condition some of the gatherings are loose in the binding although still attached, some full page plates tanned. Binding good condition attractive. See photos Publisher: see above.
