Beschreibung
A scarce first edition of The Rookeries of London, complete with two plates and the appended work regarding public baths. A first edition of The Rookeries of London, in rebacked cloth. N.S. Wales Parliamentary Library stamps to the title page, and pages 1, 237, 239, 264, and on the back of each of the two plates. With two plates, collated complete. Thomas Beames was a clergyman whom, after witnessing the extreme poverty of inner-city London, decided to report his own eye-witness accounts of London's 'rookeries'. He uses this mid-19th century work to argue that the terrible living conditions of these rookeries had a direct impact on education, lifestyle, and crime. To the rear, a pamphlet is included from the Committee for Promoting the Establishment of Baths and Wash-Houses for the Labouring Classes: 'Public Baths and Wash-Houses. Suggestions for building and fitting up parochial or borough establishments, with detailed calculations of the working expenses and earnings of such establishments.' In the original cloth binding. Rebacked with spine laid down. Externally smart, with slight wear to the extremities and minor staining to the spine and front board. Internally, binding is slightly strained. Pages are generally bright and clean, with some spotting to the plates and the leaves either side, and the odd spot to the first and last few pages. Tidemark to the occasional leaf. Very Good.
