FIRST EDITION. Oblong 4to. 11 x 8.5 inches. 64pp. Illustrated by drawings by Ridgewell. Bound in half black cloth over orange boards. Extremities a little worn and front board sunned at lower edge; otherwise a very good copy. DNB describes the Ruthless Rhymes books as 'forerunners of the sick joke'. The humour is even extended into the index. Jocelyn Henry Clive Graham (1874 - 1936) was educated at Eton and Sandhurst and served in the South African and First World Wars. His first book of nonsense verses, Ruthless Rhymes appeared in 1899. The illustrator is the cartoonist William Ridgewell (1881 - 1937) well known for his advertisement drawings.
