xi (errata on p.xi)+101 (p.93 et seq being log tables)+(1, pub.notice), a few small, un-numbered, text figs and diagrams; main fault is a 4 x 3 cm. rectangular excision from lower outer margin of t.p., two short marks to edge suggest this was probably an institutional stamp, text not affetcs, no front endpapers though presumably issued as present at rear, front end-gutter slightly opening but sealed with transparent tear-repair tape, otherwise internally clean, tight and unmarked. Blind-stamped red cloth covers clean, edges only minimally worn but several small chips to spine end regions exposing gatherings, spine unlettered but gilt title etc. centre front. Part 2 had not appeared when this was issued, pub. notice towards end of author's impending work has different title but may be the Part 2 refered to in author's Preface. I cannot help quoting the final sentence of this: 'It is, perhaps, necessary to offer some apology to the public for the great length of time that has elapsed since the Work first entered the press:- one of the most severe domestic calamities, combined with heavy official duties, must plead my excuse.'
