After Georgia joined the Confederacy in 1861, he enlisted as an officer of the Chatham Artillery. Soon promoted to lieutenant colonel in the Confederate army and to the position of chief of artillery for the military district of Georgia, Jones served conspicuously during the 1864 Siege of Savanna as the Chief of Confederate Artillery. Following the war, he was the foremost Georgia historian of the nineteenth century. Beginning after the Civil War and continuing into the 1880s, Jones collected Confederate service records and reminiscences of former soldiers.
