CONTENT DESCRIPTION: Richard Johnson graduated from West Point in 1849 and until the outbreak of the Civil War was employed chiefly on frontier service with the US Army. In 1861 he was commissioned lieutenant colonel of the 3rd Kentucky Cavalry Regiment and soon after was promoted to brigadier general, United States Volunteers. As a cavalry commander he took part in the western campaigns of 1861 and 1862, and at Stones River and Chickamauga in 1863. During the Battle of Chattanooga, his division was one of the several that charged up Missionary Ridge. The next year he commanded a division in the Army of the Cumberland during the invasion of Georgia and was severely wounded at the Battle of New Hope Church on May 28, 1864. On August 22, 1864, Johnson was made chief of cavalry of the Military Division of the Mississippi and commanded a cavalry division at the Battle of Nashville. Gen. Johnson retired from active duty in 1867. These are his important memoirs of his time in service; he writes of events, towns he fought over, and the life of a US Cavalryman during war. REFERENCES: DORN II #2156; Coulter#261 "Although this work consists of the author's reminiscences from his earliest remembrances to the date of writing, it is concerned mostly with his Civil War career."; NEVINS I pg. 114 "A disappointing memoir by a Federal general; treats solely of military matters from Kentucky to Atlanta".
