In 1938 the first illustrated edition,"With 31 photographs" with the now well-known selection of photographs by Ponting was published. There have been many re-issues. This 1956 edition contained 13 pictures, 3 of which are double page and no maps. The title page does not reflect the fewer photographs but the illustrations page does.
