First impression of the true first edition. With 56 illustrations by Cyril Hargreaves and Others. ***Near fine in black cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. The gilt is still beautifully bright having been protected by the dustwrapper. The boards are clean with just some small marks to the cloth commensurate with age and handling. Head and tail of spine slightly creased. Corners sharp. Page block edges nice and clean without any foxing. Internally the book is also near fine, with no inscriptions. The endpapers show interesting old maps of Bedford and Bedfordshire. Illustrated throughout with photogravure type photographs and line drawings. There is minimal light creasing to a few pages, probably caused in production, as the book was produced to post-war economic restrictions, and the paper stock is quite thin. No serious creases or tears. The pages are clean with hardly any foxing. No reading lean. Binding square. Spine tight. ***In a very good illustrated dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of 15s net. The dustwrapper is almost complete, with just some loss at the head and tail of the spine and corner tips. The edges along the spine are quite rubbed with some loss to the surface colour, and the extremities are slightly creased and nicked. There is a 2cm closed tear at the top edge of the front panel. The back panel is slightly marked being a white background. ***440 pages including a detailed Bibliography and Index at the back of the book. 192mm x 138mm. ***'This excursion into seventeenth century England tells the story of John Bunyan, with one of the most dramatic periods of our history as its background. As the author shows, it was an age with some extraordinary resemblances to our own. When the book was half written, some interesting documents were discovered at Aylesbury and Lincoln which throw new light upon Bunyan's second imprisonment and the writing of "The Pilgrim's Progress".
